WeatherTAP.com Now Includes Canadian Radar Mosiac Imagery and Lightning Data

WeatherTAP.com, the online leader for real-time radar, has recently added Canadian radar imagery and lightning data to its site. This new radar imagery for Canada is built with data from Environment Canada.

“We are pleased to start the year off by adding these new products,” WeatherTAP’s Program Manager Robert Parsons says. “In addition to the national and regional mosaics, we will soon be adding imagery from each of the individual radar sites in Canada.”

Currently, the radar images include national mosaics in eight, four and two kilometers, with the eight-kilometer image also available as an animation. In addition, there are provincial views and five regional views that can be animated. The five regions are Pacific, Prairies, Ontario, Quebec and Atlantic.

“The U.S. NEXRAD system provided some coverage into some heavier populated areas along the Canadian border,” Stacey Simmons, a lead developer for weatherTAP, says. “However, it was essential for us to expand our imagery to serve the weatherTAP users in Canada more effectively.”

The data set is received from Environment Canada and its weather service, the Meteorological Service of Canada, which has been serving Canada since 1871. According to the Environmental Canada web site, the organization is “dedicated to providing Canadians with a variety of specialized products and services that enable everyone to make their weather related decisions sooner and with greater confidence.”

In addition to the radar imagery, weatherTAP.com has also added lightning data imagery for Canada, with views of British Columbia, Alberta & Saskatchewan, Manitoba, Eastern Ontario and Western Quebec, North Western Ontario and Southern Quebec.

WeatherTAP subscribers range from professional meteorologists and avid storm chasers, to pilots, emergency management personnel, utility companies, airlines, roofing and construction contractors. The site has twice been named “Best of the Web” by Forbes Magazine.
